How these calculators work
- Formulas on every page. Each calculator shows the math it uses and a worked example, so you can check the result by hand.
- Rounded the way you buy. Quantities round up to whole bags, bundles, boards and posts, with a waste allowance you can change.
- Sources cited. Building code limits and product coverage figures link to the code text or the manufacturer.
- Private by design. The math runs in your browser. Your measurements are never sent to a server.
All calculators use US units: feet, inches, cubic yards and pounds. They are planning tools, not engineering. Structural work such as deck framing and stairs still has to meet your local building code. Read more about how the calculators are built and checked.
